Tinubu Sends Bill To House of Reps To Amend Police Act, Extend Inspector-General’s Tenure

President Bola Tinubu has submitted a bill to the National Assembly seeking to amend the Police Act, specifically the tenure of the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The proposed amendment comes after the police denied claims in July that IGP Kayode Egbetokun was planning to lobby for a bill to raise the retirement age of officers.

IGP Egbetokun was appointed by President Tinubu in June 2023 for a four-year term, alongside four new service chiefs. However, according to Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun is scheduled to retire in September 2024, upon reaching the age of 60.

If the amendment is not passed, IGP Egbetokun’s tenure would be cut short to just one year and three months, leaving two years and nine months remaining of his four-year appointment. The House of Representatives is expected to deliberate on this proposed amendment.
